John CHIU, M.D., FRCS (U.S.) Medical Director, California Center

Dr. John Chiu is an internationally recognized pioneer and global leader in
minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS). He is the director of
Neurosurgery at the California Spine Institute, immediate past President of
the International Society for Minimally Intervention in Spine Surgery
(ISMISS), and Founding Chairman of the American Academy of
Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (AAMISMS) as an Honored
Presidential Guest at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons,
2010 and 2011 Annual Meeting.
He promotes interdisciplinary, inter-specialty and international education,
research and development of MISS. His clinical interests include endoscopic spine surgery,
tissue modulation technology (laser) and the unique SurgMatix (US patent), a surgical
informatics related to a “digital technological convergence and control system” for a DOR
(Digital OR).
Dr. Chiu has authored and co-authored numerous peer reviewed articles, chapters and textbooks
and has been appointed to two editorial boards and as an Editor-in-Chief for medical, surgical,
and research journals. He is frequently invited to major national and international conferences
and seminars related to MISS, and to major hospitals and medical universities, as a visiting
professor, speaker, instructor, course director and to perform spinal surgeries. In addition, Dr.
Chiu has been an honored guest and the key note speaker at numerous national and international
conferences.
He is one of the Editors-in-Chief and an author of the textbook of “The Practice of Minimally
Invasive Spinal Technique” (2000 and 2005 editions).
Dr. Chiu was recognized at Third World Congress of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery in
Brazil in August 2012 as one of global leaders in minimally invasive spinal surgery and
as honorary vice president for the international conference. Recently, a textbook published
in Mexico by Professor Braulio Hernandez Carabajal paid tribute to Dr. Chiu and his MISS
work.
